Robert E. Anderson, MD
With over 25 years of experience in the field of Reproductive Medicine, Dr. Robert Anderson has developed a highly successful approach to the treatment of every type of fertility problem. He is double board certified in Obstetrics and Gynecology as well as Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility and has been practicing in Orange County longer than any other Board Certified Reproductive Endocrinologist. Dr. Anderson is a leader in the clinical practice of all facets of Reproductive Medicine. In 1989, following his fellowship training in Reproductive Medicine at the University of Southern California, the location of the second IVF program in the United States, he introduced Operative Laparoscopy and Hysteroscopy to the physicians of Hoag Hospital in Newport Beach by performing procedures that had previously required Laparotomy, including the treatment of ectopic pregnancy, endometriosis, uterine fibroids and pelvic adhesions. He brought expertise in the use of the CO2 and KTP lasers and was instrumental in credentialing the members of the Department of Ob/Gyn in the use of the laser for Laparoscopy. Dr. Anderson founded the Southern California Center for Reproductive Medicine in 1992. This center was the first independent IVF center in Orange County located outside a hospital. In 1993, he founded the Southern California Institute for Reproductive Sciences, the first independent IVF laboratory in Orange County. He introduced the routine use of assisted hatching to IVF in 1995. He brought the technology for Blastocyst culturing to Orange County resulting in the first live births of babies from fresh (1999) and frozen (1996) blastocysts. Dr. Anderson has been directly involved in the development of the current practice of IVF by pioneering the procedure involving the transfer of embryos by transvaginal ultrasound guidance. Dr. Anderson has also formed a collaboration with stem cell researchers who developed a stem cell line from embryos donated by patients at the Center, which was one of the initial lines that qualified for federal funding of ongoing research in the field. He has developed a program for Pre-Implantation Genetic Diagnosis (PGD) and is currently leading the public dialogue for responsible use of this technology while it is still evolving until further developments allow it to be utilized on a widespread basis. Dr. Anderson is a Fellow of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG), and a member of the Society for Assisted Reproductive Technology (SART). He is also an active member of the American Society for Reproductive Medicine (ASRM), the American Medical Association (AMA), the California Medical Association (CMA) and Orange County Medical Association (OCMA).
